Cisco Meraki WPN

Private In-Room WiFi for Hotels, Dorms & MDUs

Meraki's Wireless Private Network (WPN) extends iPSK to give each user a secure, personal network in multi-unit living environments — hotels, dormitories, and apartments. With iPSK, all of a user's devices authenticate to the SSID with the same key and can talk to each other within their own segment. With WPN enabled, every packet from devices sharing an iPSK is tagged with a WPN ID and only forwarded between devices carrying the same ID — so each resident gets a private network on shared infrastructure.

What is a Wireless Private Network (WPN)?

A Wireless Private Network (WPN) is a secure, dedicated wireless network for private use by an organization or a specific group of users, with options for guest access. Unlike a public wireless network, a WPN restricts access to authorized users for enhanced security, control, and reliability.

Key features:

  • Security — encrypted connections and secure authentication (including RADIUS) protect sensitive data.
  • Custom configuration — network settings can be tailored to specific needs.
  • Scalability — capacity expands with user and device demand.
  • Dedicated resources — consistent performance without congestion from external users.

What is Meraki's WiFi personal network (WPN)?

Meraki WPN assigns a unique identifier to each user's devices, isolating their traffic from everyone else on the same SSID and VLAN. Multiple users connect to the same network name, but their devices stay private from one another — essential where many users share infrastructure but need individual security and privacy.

Key features of Meraki WPN:

  • Network segmentation — each user gets a private, secure WiFi environment with a unique key.
  • Device isolation & discovery — users only see and interact with their own devices.
  • Scalability — supports many iPSKs per SSID for large deployments.
  • Enhanced security — eliminates the risks of shared credentials.
  • Simplified IT management — fewer support tickets and less administrative overhead.

WPN extends beyond just wireless clients

When each unit or room has its own access point — for example, the MR36H — Cloud4Wi assigns a dedicated iPSK per resident and automatically configures the access point's Ethernet ports to match the network segment of devices on that iPSK. Residents can connect both wired and wireless devices, discover their own devices easily, and stay protected from external traffic.

Example

Mary works on her laptop over WiFi while her printer is plugged into the access point's Ethernet port. When her neighbor Lisa visits and connects with Lisa's own iPSK, Lisa can't see Mary's devices — but she can print on the printer in her own room. Residents can roam across access points and stay connected to their room's devices, wired or WiFi .

How Cloud4Wi automates Meraki WPN

Cloud4Wi orchestrates all the Meraki network configuration needed to provision each user over WiFi or cable:

  • Initialize port profiles for each unit managed in Cloud4Wi.
  • Update port profiles with WPN IDs automatically when a user is associated to a unit.
  • Propagate key changes — when a user changes their iPSK via the WiFi portal, all port profiles update automatically.
  • Handle suspensions and deletions — when a user's service is suspended or removed, port profiles update automatically.

Doing this by hand for hundreds or thousands of residents would be unmanageable — automation is the point.

Why Cloud4Wi for multi-tenant properties

Cloud4Wi is a next-generation WiFi management solution for multi-tenant properties — apartments, student housing, co-living, and commercial buildings:

  • Hassle-free onboarding — generate and assign Personal Pre-Shared Keys, including via QR code.
  • Simplified management — run thousands of tenants while eliminating password-sharing risk.
  • Stronger privacy — each tenant gets a private, isolated connection.
  • Built to scale — from a single property to an entire portfolio.
  • Reduced IT overhead — fewer support tickets; tenants manage their own devices.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Cisco Meraki WPN

A Wireless Private Network is a secure, dedicated wireless network restricted to authorized users, with optional guest access. Unlike a normal shared network, it isolates each user's traffic for enhanced privacy, security, and reliable performance. In multi-unit settings it lets many users share one SSID while keeping their devices private from each other.

Meraki WPN (Wi-Fi Personal Network) extends iPSK by tagging each user's devices with a unique WPN ID. Devices sharing the same iPSK and WPN ID can communicate, while everyone else on the SSID stays isolated. This gives each resident a private network on shared infrastructure — ideal for hotels, dorms, and apartments.

WPN assigns a unique identifier to each user's devices and only forwards traffic between devices carrying the same WPN ID. So even though many users connect to the same network name and VLAN, their devices remain isolated from one another — preventing unauthorized access while preserving easy discovery within each user's own segment.

Both. When each room has its own access point, such as the MR36H, Cloud4Wi configures the AP's Ethernet ports to match the network segment of the resident's iPSK. Residents connect wired devices like printers and wireless devices like laptops in the same private network, and can roam across access points seamlessly.

Cloud4Wi orchestrates the Meraki configuration end to end: it initializes port profiles per unit, updates them with WPN IDs when a user is assigned, propagates iPSK changes made in the resident portal, and updates profiles when a service is suspended or deleted — removing the manual work of doing this at scale.

All three. Hotels can give each room a private guest network for personal devices and streaming; dormitories give students isolated, private networks they manage themselves; and multi-tenant residences give each unit a secure, separate network. In every case, Cloud4Wi automates key and port-profile management so property teams aren't doing it manually.
