Opera San José turned its existing Ruckus-powered in-venue WiFi into a live audience-engagement platform with Cloud4Wi — letting patrons vote, in real time, on the ending of a Mozart opera. Results across the five-day run: 36% of patrons connected, 51% completed the live vote, and 84% opted in to future marketing.
Opera San José is a professional opera company in the heart of Silicon Valley — unique in the United States for its resident company of principal artists. It presents four mainstage productions annually at the historic California Theatre in San José, and runs a state-of-the-art digital media studio to produce and broadcast fully produced productions. The company focuses on developing emerging artists and providing educational programs for the community.
For Opera San José, in-venue WiFi was once just a background utility — present, but untapped as a way to connect with the audience. Under the leadership of General Director & CEO Shawna Lucey, that changed with an innovative idea: turn passive spectators into active participants.
Shawna wanted to move beyond the traditional one-way performance to a genuine two-way dialogue — to understand patrons not only as attendees but as individuals with distinct preferences and interests. Her concept: stage a live, in-performance survey that let the audience collectively choose the ending of a classic opera, giving them real agency in the artistic creation.
To make it possible, she needed a technological solution capable of capturing and processing audience input in real time and integrating it into the unfolding performance.
Opera San José partnered with Cloud4Wi to evolve its existing Ruckus-based WiFi from a basic amenity into a patron-engagement tool — without replacing hardware.
The revamped WiFi became a platform for real-time data collection and engagement. After logging in through the captive portal, each patron automatically received a personalized email with a direct link to a survey designed to be completed during intermission. To maximize participation, Opera San José also provided dedicated tablets — so every patron, whether on a smartphone or preferring a physical touchpoint, could cast a vote and take part in the “participatory democracy.”
The call to action ran across multiple channels: promoted during WiFi onboarding and by staff throughout the venue. The results of the live poll were tabulated quickly, and the cast was notified of the chosen ending before Act 2 — creating a genuinely interactive theatrical experience.
“Technology and Mozart might sound like an unlikely duo, but with Cloud4Wi, they’re in perfect harmony. We’ve launched a new age of enlightenment: our audiences aren’t just watching opera—they’re shaping it.”
— Shawna Lucey, General Director & CEO, Opera San José
The solution launched during the run of Così fan tutte (September 14–28) — a fitting tribute to Mozart, who loved to keep audiences guessing, by letting patrons decide who ends up with whom.
The results:
By giving the audience a voice, Opera San José created an experience that was personal, fun, and memorable — a model for how technology can enrich the arts, making opera more accessible and interactive than ever. As Shawna put it: “For the first time, audiences don’t just watch Mozart — they shape him. It’s opera, mischief, and democracy rolled into one.”
This was Opera San José’s first time using Cloud4Wi to create such an immersive experience — and if this is what they accomplished out of the gate, there’s no telling what they’ll do next. “Opera is timeless. Cloud4Wi makes it timely,” said Shawna.
